This is the illustrated 1979 first edition of PICTURES BY J. TOLKIEN with a foreword and notes by Christopher Tolkien. Collected illustrations by J R R TOLKIEN published in six 1973-79 calendars - with supporting preliminary graphics by TOLKIEN, and a foreword by Christopher TOLKIEN including detailed notes on each of his father's pictures. Enclosed within its publisher's original laminated slipcase, folio hardback, around 12 inches by more than 12 tall, is bound in its publisher's original chocolate coloured cloth with TOLKIEN's initials to upper board in original gilt. First edition published by George Allen & Unwin, London, in 1979.
