Lord of the Rings Tolkien Handbound Leather 50th Anniversary One-Volume Tooled
The Lord of the Rings - 50th Anniversary One-Volume Edition. Custom Hand-Bound Leather Display Edition with Tooled Tengwar Script, Brass Corner Caps, and Strap-and-Stud Closure. This is the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt 50th Anniversary One-Volume Edition of J. The Lord of the Rings.

The Fellowship of the Ring. The Return of the King. In a single hardcover volume, with the fully corrected text prepared by Wayne G.

Hammond and Christina Scull to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the work's original 1954-55 publication. This specific copy is the nineteenth printing, dated 2021, with printing-line "19 2021" and internal job code 4500826083 on the verso of the title page. The text block is unread and unmarked throughout. The publisher's standard trade hardcover has been rebound, by an unidentified hand, in a tan leather wrap that is the principal attraction of this volume. Two bands of tooled Tengwar (Elvish) script running across the top and bottom of both front and rear panels - the Ring Inscription in Tolkien's invented Fëanorian script.

Front panel impressed in dark tone. THE LORD OF THE RINGS / J.

TOLKIEN / 50TH ANNIVERSARY ONE-VOLUME EDITION. Rear panel impressed with the full Ring Verse in English ("Three Rings for the Elven-kings under the sky. "), in the same dark tone. Solid brass corner caps at all four corners of both panels.

Brown leather strap closure across the fore-edge, secured with two brass studs and a folded brass-stud tab. Bright yellow endpapers (consistent with the underlying HMH binding) visible behind the leather wrap. Lettering Variant on Rear Cover. Buyers should note one feature of the rear-cover tooling: the binder's transcription of the Ring Verse reads "DARD LORD" in place of "DARK LORD" on the line beginning "One for the. This is a single-letter substitution in the impressed lettering and is clearly visible in the photographs.

It is original to the custom binding and is not present in the underlying text block, which carries the correct, published Tolkien text throughout. This is an aftermarket custom rebinding executed over a standard publisher hardcover.

It is not a publisher-issued leather edition. Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's own deluxe 50th Anniversary Edition is bound in black full leather with copper-and-gilt stamping, gilded text-block edges, a ribbon placemarker, and a publisher's slipcase - none of which are present on this volume. The text block itself, however, is the authentic 2021 HMH printing of the corrected anniversary text. Binding tight and square, gutter unstressed, pages clean and bright.

No previous-owner inscriptions, bookplates, or markings. The four brass corner caps are intact and securely affixed. At two of the four corners, the leather has rubbed through to the substrate immediately adjacent to the brass cap, exposing a small area of the original blue cloth case beneath; these abrasions are documented in the corner close-up photographs. The leather elsewhere on the cover is unmarked, the strap closure is fully functional, and the tooled lettering and Tengwar script are crisp and fully legible across all panels.

About the 50th Anniversary Text. The 50th Anniversary Edition, first published in 2004 to mark fifty years since the appearance of.

Is the most thoroughly corrected text of. Hammond and Christina Scull worked from Tolkien's own marked copies and from his correspondence with the Allen & Unwin offices to correct hundreds of accumulated errors across earlier printings. The result is the closest reading of Tolkien's intended text in print, and the one-volume hardcover remains the standard scholarly setting of the work. This volume comes from the estate intake of NM Literacy Project, an Albuquerque, New Mexico resale operation working with donor estates and retirement communities across the state.
