Vintage complete three-volume hardcover boxed set of J. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, published by Houghton Mifflin Company, Boston. All three volumes are stated Second Edition and retain their original dust jackets, fold-out maps, and publisher's slipcase. Each volume includes its original large fold-out map at the rear. The maps remain present and display well.
One map has a small tear along the outer edge, as shown in the photos. All three volumes also contain a decorative Alice Winship bookplate on the front endpaper.
Condition: This is a complete vintage set with considerable exterior/storage wear. The original cream-colored slipcase has substantial staining, discoloration, scuffing, wrinkling and edge/corner wear. There is also visible staining/discoloration to the interior of the slipcase. The original dust jackets show substantial age and storage wear, including staining/discoloration, wrinkling, rubbing, scuffs, edge wear and areas of chipping/tearing. The books themselves present considerably better than their jackets, although The Fellowship of the Ring has minor staining/discoloration along the upper portion of some interior pages.
Please see the close-up photographs for examples. Bindings and interior pages otherwise remain intact. Fold-out maps are present, with the minor tear noted above. This is best considered a complete reading/collector set with all three original dust jackets, maps and slipcase, but with significant cosmetic wear rather than a fine-condition collector example.
Please review all photographs carefully for the exact condition of the books, dust jackets, maps and slipcase.
