The Lord of the Rings J R R TOLKIEN Allen & Unwin 1965-66 FIRST EDITION 15/11/11

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, comprising The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers and The Return of the King. London: George Allen & Unwin. First editions, impressions 15th, 11th and 11th respectively, printed in 1965 and 1966.

Octavo (23 x 15 x 10cm), pp. With a folding map at the rear of each volume. Publisher's dark red cloth, title and decorative ring stamped on spine in gilt, plain endpapers, edges trimmed, top edge stained red, fore- and bottom edges unstained.

With the grey wove paper dust wrappers, lettered to front and spine and with the "Ring and Eye" device in black, red and gold, unclipped and each priced at 25s. The three volumes are in similar condition overall, but are individually described below for accuracy and photographed extensively. The Fellowship of the Ring (15th impression, 1966). The book itself is externally in very clean condition with very bright gilt lettering. There is light bumping to foot of spine, corners are a tad bumped, the extremities are slightly darkened, the edges are a little thumbed with a few foxing spots, and the top edge is ever-so-slightly faded and a little grubby. Binding itself is firm (although the book has the give of a read one) with spine a little cocked. There is an inscription penned to FFEP, light offsetting to FEPs, and marginal foxing to the last few pages.

The unclipped dust wrapper is tanned to spine, joints, and (partially) to rear cover, with a small stain to spine, with residue of an old small sticker to front flap, nibbled slightly to extremities with hardly any loss. The Two Towers (11th impression in 12th impression dustwrapper, 1965). The book itself is externally in overall clean condition with very bright gilt lettering.

There is light bumping and wear to spine tips, covers are a little dusty, the joints, corners and extremities are slightly rubbed, the covers are a little dusty, the extremities are a little darkened, the edges show a few spots of foxing, and the top edge is faded and grubby. Binding itself is firm (although again, the book has the give of a read one) with the spine heavily cocked. There is an inscription penned to FFEP, light offsetting to FEPs, and marginal foxing to the last couple of pages.

The unclipped dust wrapper is tanned to spine and joints, with a couple of larger stains to spine and a couple of others to front panel, with a small sticker to front flap, nibbled slightly to extremities with hardly any loss. The Return of the King (11th impression, 1965). There is light bumping and wear to spine tips, the joints, corners and extremities are slightly rubbed and bumped, the edges show a few spots of foxing, and the top edge has a couple of small stains. Internally the book is clean and uninscribed, light offsetting to FEPs. The unclipped dust wrapper is slightly tanned to spine and joints, with a few very tiny stains to spine, nibbled slightly to extremities with a few small closed tears with trivial loss to spine tips. All dust wrappers have now been placed in archival wrappers for protection. Please consult all photos before purchasing to make sure you are happy with the condition of the book(s).
