Owned for over 15 years carefully stored and not displayed it. A rare and highly desirable UK HarperCollins deluxe illustrated centenary edition to mark 100 years since Tolkien's birth. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings, signed by Alan Lee and issued ONLY 250 numbered copies. This example is copy number 19, an especially appealing low number within the edition. Published in London in 1991, this is the sought-after one-volume deluxe issue with ISBN 0261102745, produced to commemorate the 100 year centenary of Tolkien's birth.
It is not the standard trade illustrated edition, but the far Rarer Leather Signed and Slipcased Collector's issue. The volume is illustrated throughout with 50 full-colour paintings by Alan Lee, specially commissioned for this Tolkien centenary edition, and presents the complete work in a beautifully produced single volume. Quarter bound in blue leather with grey/green cloth boards and housed in the original matching slipcase, it is finished with beautiful silver-gilt page edges, silver-gilt titling, and Tolkien's JRRT monogram to the binding. Signed Limited Tolkien editions of this calibre are increasingly difficult to find, and this one has all the qualities collectors look for: the UK HarperCollins issue, the true signed limitation page, the original slipcase, Alan Lee's landmark 50 centenary artworks, and an attractive low limitation number. A standout collector's copy for anyone building a serious Tolkien library, seeking an important Alan Lee Signed edition, or wanting a centenary issue with real rarity, presence, and shelf appeal. The volume itself remains in excellent condition. The original slipcase has a scratch/some external wear, all of which is shown in the photographs. This is confined to the slipcase and does not affect the book itself. Please refer to the images, which form part of the description.
